SMM update
I spent just over twenty hours in the studio over the weekend working on the final arrangements, mixes and mastering for the audio CD version of South Mountain Magic. It's taken a long time, but I'm nearly finished.
For those of you who have successfully tuned me out while I've gone through this lengthy labor of love, South Mountain Magic (SMM) is a movie. It was written, directed and edited by my pal Dave Dull for Maryland's Antietam Cable. The movie aired from 3 September 2005 to Halloween. The DVD is already available and it boasts both a stereo and a 5.1 surround mix of the score. I'll provide ordering information for the DVD here soon, but we are also planning to offer a package deal with both the movie DVD and the audio CD. The audio CD will also be available via my favorite online indie-friendly distributor - CDBaby.com. I should have the CD back from the manufacturer before the end of February.
I've probably mentioned this here previously (I don't know for certain, I don't usually read my blog) but I'm more than a little annoyed that I don't have an entry in my discography for 2005. That is the kind of thing that is difficult to convey. But suffice it to say that it truly bugs me. It took me over a year to compose, perform and record SMM. I've never created anything more expansive and difficult. With the amount of work I performed in from 2004 to now... the absence of an entry on the discography seems like an affront to science. With that said, I must admit that I'm damned proud of this piece of music. I have no idea who will enjoy listening to it, but I'm proud of it nonetheless.
Once I have the CD available I'll place a track or two online for free download so that you (yes you) can give it a listen without cost. I don't know if I can describe it. My buddy Riceman once told me that you cannot truly discuss or explain music with language. That's why it's music. Or something like that, I'm pretty sure I was Drunk at the time. But here is how I would describe the music with words and faulty punctuation:
SMM is a quasi-orchestral movie score. It combines traditional symphonic instruments with traditional appalachian instruments and a wealth of indigenous percussion instruments. The instrumentation changes quickly and often drastically while maintaining an overall tone.
Err... ok, I give up on that... it's music, I'm a musician, I can't describe it... as I said above, I'll make sure that I link to free downloads soon.
In the meantime, I'm just bloody well delighted that I'm nearly finished. I have software upgrades for my studio system that I haven't even installed yet because this project has consumed my resources. I'm planning to go into the studio this weekend to do some preliminary work with my buddy LB (PoundCake) and I'll be returning to the studio to begin work on the next Booze Monkey album, entitled Fourth Street in February. I cannot wait to begin working on the next BMo disc, that will be some long overdue catharsis.
Thanks for reading.
Update: The SMM DVD can be purchased directy from Antietam Cable for $24.95 + tax and another $5.00 for shipping and handling. It cannot be ordered from their website (they just aren't set up for that sort of thing) but it only takes a phone call and a credit card. The phone number is: 240-420-2096. As mentioned above, a combo deal containing both the DVD and my SMM audio CD will be available around the end of February.

YAY!
